Eliminating the outer box removes material cost, packing labor and dimensional weight, all of which reduce the cost of moving the item.

Fewer voids also mean less filler material, which reduces waste volume reaching households and the disposal cost that follows.

Fulfillment centers benefit from a simpler flow, since a certified package needs only a label rather than selection of an appropriate box and the packing labor that follows.

Some marketplaces reward certification with reduced fees or preferential handling, which gives suppliers a direct financial reason to redesign packaging that would otherwise stay as it is.

Privacy and damage are the trade-offs

Shipping in retail packaging reveals the contents to anyone who sees the parcel, which matters for some categories more than others.

Programs typically allow opting into an outer box at checkout, and certain categories are excluded from own-container shipping for this reason.

Damage to retail packaging also becomes visible damage to the delivered product, so a scuffed box generates returns that an outer carton would have prevented.

Design changes follow the requirement

Suppliers redesign packaging to eliminate fragile plastic shells, reduce empty space and use materials that resist crushing, since those changes make certification achievable.

The same redesign usually improves shelf packaging, because a package strong enough to ship alone handles warehouse and store handling easily.

What began as a shipping requirement therefore reshaped consumer packaging broadly, including for products sold mainly through physical stores.
